Door 2 gave us spacetime and worldlines. Now pick one event on your worldline:
What can that event physically affect? And what could have physically affected it? The answer is encoded by a light cone.
1. Why a cone?
Imagine the button press occurs at the center of a spacetime diagram. At that event, you emit a flash of light in every spatial direction. One second later, the light has traveled one light-second away.
Two seconds later, it can be two light-seconds away. Ten seconds later, ten light-seconds away. So as more time elapses, light can reach a larger spatial region.
On a spacetime diagram, that expanding boundary forms a cone. That is why the future light cone opens outward. Not because the future becomes more uncertain.
Because:
More elapsed time allows causal influence to reach farther through space.
2. The future light cone
Everything inside the upper cone is an event that your button press could, in principle, influence with something moving no faster than light. For example:
- a radio message
- a laser pulse
- a spacecraft moving slower than light
- a chain of ordinary physical causes
The edge of the cone corresponds to light itself. Inside the cone corresponds to slower-than-light physical trajectories. So:
inside cone → causal influence possible
on cone → light-speed connection
outside cone → causal influence impossible at that separation
This is why the light cone is fundamentally about causality.
3. The past light cone
The same structure extends backward. Your past light cone contains events that could have influenced the button press. If an event is sufficiently far away and too recent, its signal could not yet have reached Austin.
It is therefore outside the past light cone of your button press. This gives us a rigorous replacement for vague phrases like:
"That is too far away to matter yet."
Relativity gives a geometric condition for causal connection.
4. Timelike, lightlike, spacelike
We can now classify relationships between events.
Timelike separation
An event lies inside the light cone. A slower-than-light object or signal could connect the events. Cause and effect are physically possible.
Lightlike separation
An event lies on the cone. Only something traveling at exactly light speed could connect them.
Spacelike separation
An event lies outside the cone. Connecting the events would require faster-than-light influence. Special relativity does not allow that.
The light cone divides spacetime by causal accessibility, not by whether events "exist."
5. Why causal order matters
Suppose event A causes event B. If B lies inside A's future light cone, every valid inertial observer agrees on the basic causal ordering:
A can come before and influence B.
Observers may disagree about the numerical time interval or spatial distance. They do not get to reverse a timelike causal relationship simply by changing reference frames. This is important because Door 1 removed universal simultaneity, but it did not remove causal order.
Relativity is flexible about distant "now." It is strict about causal structure.
6. What is outside the cone?
This question caused confusion earlier in our exploration. Suppose a distant event is outside your future light cone. That does not mean:
"It can never be reached."
It means:
It cannot be reached from your current event with the amount of time currently available, even at light speed.
As your worldline continues into the future, your future light cone extends farther. A location that is too distant to reach in one second might be reachable in ten years. So the cone widens because causal reach expands with elapsed time.
7. Light cone versus possibility tree
This distinction is essential for the rest of our model. A light cone answers:
Where can physical causal influence propagate?
A possibility tree answers:
Which alternative trajectories or outcomes might occur?
Those are not the same thing.
LIGHT CONE
physical spacetime
causal reachability
POSSIBILITY TREE
alternative outcomes
probabilities / trajectories
Later we will place possibility structure at the Global Consciousness level in our working model. Do not import that concept backward into relativity.
8. Why this matters for consciousness
We are still doing physics here. If later we claim that consciousness-level access or coupling occurs across ordinary spatial separation without signals propagating through physical spacetime, then that is not something light-cone physics already explains. It would be an additional metaphysical premise requiring its own evidence.
That separation is important. The light cone tells us what ordinary physical causal transmission permits.
Doorway to Door 4
The edge of every light cone is traced by light. That raises a strange question:
If light defines the causal boundary, how much proper time passes along a lightlike path?
The answer is zero. But we need to be very careful about what that does and does not mean. That takes us to Door 4: Proper Time and Light.
